My buddy billy caught a 47" red off the beach out back last week. Never seen one that big. (pic below - gus's momma got him to lay next to the fish for scale). I got so jacked about it I bought a bunch of surf fishing stuff at the store (all my tackle is inshore stuff) and went out a couple of days later. no clue what I was doing other than asking billy a million questions after he caught the the big red. Type of tackle, bait, when, where, blah blah. so there I am I night trying to figure out how to throw a cast net in the dark (since that was high tide, yep I scouted the slough at low tide so I knew what to do). luckily I bought a small one and it was pretty easy to work out. pretty soon I had myself a bucket full of baitfish and a line in the water. didn't catch anything with the surf rod but I netted a nice red with the cast net. pretty fun. better late than never right? that's a big freakin' red! and you caught a red with a cast net on the beach? at night?? damn, that's crazy. and of course neither red was kept as it would have violated current restrictions...

is it unusual to catch a red with a cast net? I have no clue.
The big dog went back in the water about 90 seconds after I took that picture. The one I netted - honestly I thought it was a whiting or something....hey it was dark.

I guess unusual would be relative here. I see reds off of docks all the time so I guess if people tried to cast net them (if it were legal) then it wouldn't be so unusual. But yes, cast netting a red on the beach at night is a pretty spectacular feat, in my opinion. Nice work!

I was just backchecking my regulations and realized they were updated in July. I missed this; Red Snapper are legal again? Severely limited open season in the Gulf, open from June 1 to July 23. No such restriction in the Atlantic, unless I am missing something?? http://myfwc.com/docs/RulesRegulations/ ... _Chart.pdf

Pretty sure Snapper are still closed in S GA and N FL, within a certain area. They are going to get some 'new data' and re-evaluate the restrictions sometime this fall/winter i think. In regards to the changes in July, the license requirement for shore based fishing has been repealed?

I'm not following you, Nate. I don't see in the regs where Red Snapper are not allowed to be caught here. And I understood that fishing from the shore did not require a saltwater license, when/where was that not true?? Damn rules. ::update edit:: Found the part you were talking about, the Red Snapper are still closed in Federal waters (3 miles offshore). So, guess you can catch them within 3 miles. And, noticeably absent is the rule allowing you to fish from shore (saltwater) without a license. I know that was in there last time I looked, I had to prove a point to my Pops! ha!

When I was in the ville a few weeks back, I told Dad that he needed a license to fish from the dock. He went online to get a license, and found that that law had been repealed or something.

I suppose your dad is just a little younger than mine... but my dad hit the age where he doesn't need a license at all anymore. Chalk one up for the old guys!

too funny... you have to have a license, but it's free. wth? Quote: 1. When did the shoreline license requirement take effect? The new shoreline fishing license requirement took effect Aug. 1, 2009.
2. Who is required to have a valid shoreline fishing license with them? Resident saltwater anglers who fish from shore or a structure affixed to shore will need to buy a shoreline fishing license unless they have a regular saltwater fishing license or are exempt.
3. How much does the license cost? The license is free, effective July 1, 2010. However, anglers who obtain the license over the phone will pay a convenience fee of $3.33 to the vendor who provides the service, and those who obtain the license off the Internet will pay a $2.31 convenience fee."
13. Why did the state pass this shoreline fishing license requirement? At the request of the FWC, the Florida Legislature passed the shoreline fishing license requirement to head off a federal registration requirement that would have gone into effect Jan. 1, 2010, and would have had a $15 to $25 fee, beginning in 2011. The shoreline license makes Florida's resident anglers exempt from that federal fee.

My fishing comeback in 2005, after a 22-year hiatus, was a well-documented disaster. There can't be a shittier place to cast a line than along the bonnie banks of the Oak Harbor boat ramp. The blue crabs decimated my bait shrimp in no time. And my mood was certainly not elevated by having Gus the ex-"sheem'bo'" skipper buzzing non-stop in my left ear with his Portugese accented fractured English patois***, and a fighter squadron of mosquitoes sucking blood from the right one.
Thank You, God! for the many blessings Thou hast bestowed upon me.
*** For example, "sheem-bo" = "shrimp boat."
